Chapter 1 - The Fracture

The dining room was designed to impress—clean lines, polished marble, and a wall of glass that stretched from floor to ceiling. Beyond it, the driveway disappeared into darkness, broken only by the faint reflection of the room’s soft golden light.

At the center of it all sat Elara Vance.

She wore a long-sleeved metallic gold dress that caught the light with every subtle movement, though she herself barely moved at all. Her posture was perfect, her hands resting lightly beside her black quilted handbag on the table. She looked like someone who belonged in control.

Across from her, Daniel Cross was unraveling.

The tension had been building for minutes—sharp words, strained smiles, and the brittle silence of people pretending everything was still civilized. But something in Daniel had snapped.

Without warning, his hand tightened around the edge of a white porcelain plate.

“Daniel—” the older man began, his voice cautious.

Too late.

The plate swung hard, cutting through the air with a crack that shattered the room’s fragile calm. It smashed against the side of Elara’s head with a sickening sound, exploding into shards that scattered across the table and floor.

The older woman gasped, her hand flying to her chest.

For a moment, everything froze.

Elara did not scream.

She did not even flinch.

A thin line of blood began to trace its way down from the bridge of her nose, another from her cheek. Her eyes remained closed, her breathing steady, as if she had simply been interrupted mid-thought rather than assaulted.

Daniel stepped back, suddenly aware of what he had done. His chest rose and fell rapidly, anger already dissolving into something far less certain.

“Why won’t you react?” he muttered, more to himself than anyone else.

Elara opened her eyes.

They were calm. Too calm.

Without a word, she reached for her handbag.

The faint click of the clasp echoed louder than it should have.

May you like

From inside, she pulled out her phone.

And that’s when everything truly began.
