Chapter 8 - The Cost of Choices

Daniel staggered back slightly, running a hand through his hair.

“That’s insane,” he said. “That’s—no. There’s no way.”

Elara didn’t look at him.

“This house,” she said instead, glancing around the room, “this table, this life—you built it by controlling outcomes. By making sure nothing unexpected survived.”

Victoria shook her head, tears forming in her eyes. “We built this family together.”

Elara’s gaze softened—but only slightly.

“You built a version of it,” she replied. “One that didn’t include me.”

Richard’s voice dropped to almost a whisper. “I didn’t know.”

Elara held his eyes.

“You didn’t try to know.”

That was worse.

Outside, the men in suits remained still, their presence a quiet reminder that this conversation was no longer private—it was protected.

Daniel looked toward them, then back at Elara. “So what? You show up with… security, a story, and suddenly everything changes?”

Elara finally turned to him.

“It already changed,” she said.

“When?”

“When you decided I was nothing.”

Her words were steady, but something deeper lived beneath them now—not anger, but something older.

Something carried.

“For years,” she continued, “I lived with questions. About where I came from. Why I was left behind. What I did wrong.”

Victoria covered her mouth, tears slipping free.

“And then?” Richard asked quietly.

May you like

Elara’s expression shifted.

“Then I stopped asking.”
