Chapter 6 - The Name That Changed Everything

For a moment, no one moved.

Then Richard leaned forward.

The photograph was old, slightly faded at the edges. It showed a younger man—recognizable, though thinner, less polished—standing beside a woman whose face was partially obscured by sunlight. In his arms, he held a baby.

A baby wrapped in a gold blanket.

Richard’s breath caught.

“That’s…” His voice faltered.

Daniel stepped closer, squinting. “What is this supposed to—”

“It’s you,” Elara said.

The words were simple.

But they shattered something deeper than the plate ever could.

Richard straightened slowly, his face draining of color. “That’s not possible.”

“It is,” Elara replied.

Victoria shook her head violently. “No. No, we would have known—”

“You chose not to,” Elara said, her tone still calm, still precise. “It was easier that way.”

The room felt smaller.

Heavier.

Daniel looked between them, confusion giving way to something darker. “What are you talking about?”

Elara turned to him.

“You attacked me tonight,” she said. “Without hesitation. Without consequence.”

Her voice did not rise.

“That matters.”

Then she looked back at Richard.

“You built your life on control,” she continued. “On decisions that erased people when they became inconvenient.”

Richard’s hands trembled slightly.

“Elara…” he said, testing the name like it might break.

She didn’t react.

“My name,” she said quietly, “is Elara Vance.”

A pause.

Then:

“But that’s not the name you gave me.”

Silence flooded the room.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Daniel stepped back as if the air itself had turned against him.

And Richard—

For the first time in years—

Had no answer.

Outside, the men remained still, waiting.

Inside, everything that had been buried for decades was finally rising to the surface.

And this time, it wasn’t going to be ignored.
