Chapter 12 - A Different Ending

Minutes passed.

No one rushed to speak.

For the first time, the Cross family wasn’t trying to control the narrative. They were sitting in it.

Unprotected.

Unfiltered.

Richard finally stood again, slower this time.

“I don’t expect forgiveness,” he said. “But I won’t deny this anymore.”

Victoria looked at him, shocked.

“Richard—”

“She deserves the truth,” he said firmly, though his voice trembled.

Elara watched him carefully.

Daniel hesitated, then looked away, his jaw tightening. “I didn’t know,” he muttered. “But… that doesn’t excuse what I did.”

It wasn’t perfect.

But it was real.

And that mattered.

Elara let out a quiet breath.

Outside, the tension shifted. The men relaxed slightly—not leaving, but no longer on edge.

Inside, something fragile began to form.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But possibility.

Elara picked up the photograph, holding it for a moment before placing it back into her bag.

“I didn’t come here for an ending,” she said.

She looked at them—really looked this time.

“I came here for a beginning.”

And for the first time that night, the room didn’t feel like a battlefield.

It felt like something else.

May you like

Something uncertain.

But human.
