Chapter 14: The Aftermath

The underground command center transformed from a tactical war room into a makeshift sanctuary. Within an hour, Elias’s heavily armored vehicles returned, slipping undetected through the facility’s subterranean garage doors.
Clara pulled off her headset and hurried down the metal stairs to the main floor. The five young women were escorted inside, wrapped in thick thermal blankets. They were trembling, their eyes wide with the same hollow, lingering terror Clara had felt just twenty-four hours ago.
Mrs. Gable was already there, directing a team of private trauma medics. She handed out warm tea and quietly assured the girls that the nightmare was over.
Clara approached the group slowly. One of the girls, a teenager with tear-streaked blonde hair, flinched as Clara stepped closer.
"It's okay," Clara said, her voice soft but steady. She knelt so they were at eye level, just as Elias had done. "My name is Clara. I was in the cellar with you yesterday. Do you remember?"
The blonde girl blinked, recognition slowly piercing through her shock. She let out a ragged sob and leaned forward. Clara caught her, wrapping her arms around the trembling girl, offering the warmth and safety she had so desperately needed herself.
Elias stood near the armored vehicles, watching the exchange. Marcus stepped up beside him, wiping grease from his hands with a rag.

"She’s tough," Marcus murmured, nodding toward Clara. "Tougher than most."
"She’s a survivor," Elias corrected softly. "And tonight, she’s a savior."
