Chapter 2: The Sanctuary

The limousine glided down the slick, empty highway. Inside, the heavy silence was broken only by the rhythmic hum of the tires and Clara’s chattering teeth. The adrenaline that had fueled her sprint through the mud was rapidly fading, leaving behind an agonizing bone-deep chill.
The man watched her shiver. Without a word, he unbuttoned his suit jacket, slipped it off, and gently draped it over her trembling shoulders. It was warm and smelled faintly of cedar and rain.
"I'm Elias," he said quietly, keeping a respectful distance.
Clara pulled the jacket tighter around herself, her eyes darting between him and the tinted windows. "Clara," she whispered.
"We are going to my home, Clara. It is highly secure. No one will find you there tonight," Elias promised.
Thirty minutes later, the limousine descended into the brightly lit, private underground parking garage of a downtown high-rise. Elias stepped out first, offering his hand. Clara hesitated, but her bare feet were numb, and her legs shook so violently she could barely stand. She took his hand. His grip was firm but incredibly gentle.
He led her to a private elevator that opened directly into a sprawling, modern penthouse. The warm, ambient lighting was a stark contrast to the cold nightmare she had just fled.
An older woman in a neat cardigan appeared from down the hall, her eyes widening slightly at Clara’s bruised and muddy state, but she quickly masked her shock with a warm, maternal smile.
"Mrs. Gable," Elias said softly. "Our guest has had a terrible night. Please draw a hot bath and find her some clean, warm clothes. And prepare the guest suite."

Mrs. Gable nodded immediately. "Right away, Mr. Vance. Come with me, dear."
Clara looked back at Elias. He offered her a small, encouraging nod. For the first time in months, Clara felt the agonizing knot of fear in her stomach begin to loosen.
