Chapter 17: The Choice

"So, what happens now?" Clara asked, the question hanging heavy in the cool morning air.

Elias reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, black envelope. He slid it across the concrete parapet toward her.

"Inside is a new passport, a secure cell phone, and the details of an offshore account with enough funds to start over anywhere in the world," Elias explained. "Mrs. Gable packed your things. A car is waiting downstairs to take you to the airport. You are entirely free, Clara. No strings attached."

Clara stared at the envelope. It was everything she had prayed for in that dark, damp cellar. Freedom. Security. Anonymity. She could go to Europe, open a small bakery, and disappear into a quiet, peaceful life.

She reached out and rested her hand on the smooth, heavy paper. But as she touched it, she felt an unexpected hollow ache in her chest.

She looked up at Elias, then down to the command center beneath their feet—a place where people fought against the monsters in the dark. She thought of the girls sleeping safely downstairs, and the countless others still trapped in cellars and shipping containers around the world.

Clara slowly pushed the envelope back toward Elias.

"I don't want to disappear," she said, her voice surprisingly firm.

Elias raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his stoic features. "Clara, you don't owe me anything. You’ve survived a nightmare."

"And there are others still living in it," Clara countered, stepping closer to him. "You need people who know how these monsters think. You need people who have seen their faces. I don't want to run anymore, Elias. I want to help you hunt."
