Chapter 16: A New Dawn

By the time the sun began to rise, painting the industrial skyline in shades of bruised pink and pale gold, the adrenaline had completely left Clara’s system. She sat on the roof of the command center, a thick wool blanket wrapped around her shoulders, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.

The heavy metal door groaned open, and Elias stepped out onto the roof. He looked exhausted, the sharp lines of his face softened by fatigue, but there was a quiet peace in his dark eyes.

"The girls are asleep," Elias said, leaning against the concrete parapet beside her. "We’ve contacted their families. For the ones who don't have anywhere to go, my organization has safe houses and trust funds set up. They will be taken care of."

Clara looked out at the waking city. It looked different today. It wasn't a cage anymore; it was just a city.

"Thank you," Clara whispered, looking down at her coffee. "For everything. You didn't just save my life, Elias. You gave it back to me."

"You earned it back," Elias replied, turning to look at her. "You didn't just run, Clara. You fought back. You saved those five women tonight just as much as I did."

A comfortable silence settled between them, broken only by the distant hum of morning traffic.
