Chapter 19: The First Hunt

Autumn brought a bitter chill to the city, painting the trees in the parks with strokes of amber and crimson. Clara sat in the passenger seat of an unmarked surveillance van parked discreetly across from a high-end luxury hotel downtown.
She adjusted the earpiece hidden beneath her dark hair, her eyes scanning the digital tablet resting on her lap.
"Target is on the move," Clara murmured into her microphone, her voice steady and professional. "He's exiting the north elevators, heading toward the lobby lounge."
"Copy that, Clara. I have eyes on him," Elias’s voice replied smoothly in her ear. He was sitting at the bar inside, posing as a wealthy investor.
Their target was a financier who laundered money for overseas trafficking rings. He had eluded federal authorities for a decade by remaining completely anonymous, communicating only through heavily encrypted proxies. But Clara had spent three straight weeks unraveling a complex web of shell companies, finally tracing a single, negligent wire transfer to this hotel.
Clara watched the thermal feed from the lobby camera. She saw the heat signature of the target sit down two stools away from Elias.
"He's sitting, Elias," Clara instructed. "He ordered a scotch. His guard is down."
Within minutes, Elias engaged the man in conversation. Using the precise psychological profile Clara had built, Elias perfectly manipulated the financier's ego. By the time the man finished his drink, Elias had cloned his encrypted mobile device using a proximity scanner hidden in his briefcase.
"Package secured," Elias confirmed over the comms. "We have his entire ledger."

"Excellent work," Marcus chimed in from the perimeter.
Clara leaned back against the van's leather seat, letting out a long, slow breath. They had just dismantled an international laundering operation without firing a single shot.
