Chapter 20: The Storm Passes

That evening, the rain returned to the city, drumming a familiar, rhythmic beat against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse.
Clara stood by the glass, holding a mug of tea, watching the city lights blur and fracture through the raindrops. She wore a comfortable dark sweater, her posture straight and relaxed. The bruises had long since faded, leaving behind only the invisible scars that drove her forward.
Elias walked into the living room, tossing his keys onto the console table. He walked over and stood beside her, looking out at the sprawling metropolis.
"The federal marshals raided the financier's properties an hour ago," Elias said quietly. "Based on the ledger we pulled, they intercepted two shipping containers at the port. Forty-two people, Clara. Forty-two lives saved tonight, because you found that wire transfer."
Clara closed her eyes, a profound sense of peace washing over her. The hollow ache that used to live in her chest was gone, replaced by a fierce, protective warmth.
"We make a good team," Clara said softly, opening her eyes to look at him.
Elias turned to face her. The guarded, solitary man who had pulled her into his limousine months ago was gone. In his place stood a partner, a mentor, and a friend.

"The best," Elias agreed, his dark eyes reflecting the city lights.
Clara looked back out at the storm. It was exactly like the night she had run for her life, terrified and broken in the mud. But as the rain lashed against the impenetrable glass of the penthouse, Clara smiled. The storm was still raging out there in the dark, but she was no longer afraid of it. She was the one who controlled the lightning.
