Chapter 11: The Stand

The courtroom was imposing, paneled in dark oak and buzzing with the low murmur of reporters and onlookers. Clara walked down the center aisle wearing a tailored navy suit, her head held high.

She took her seat behind the prosecutor's table and allowed herself to look at the defense. Mark sat slumped in his chair. Stripped of his expensive tailored suits and arrogant posture, he looked remarkably small. A few feet behind him in the gallery sat Eleanor, her lips pressed into a thin, bitter line, clutching a designer handbag like a shield.

When the bailiff called Clara to the stand, her heart hammered against her ribs, but her steps were steady. She placed her scarred hand on the Bible and swore to tell the truth.

Under the prosecutor’s gentle questioning, Clara recounted the years of escalating control, the isolation, and the constant surveillance. Then, she described the night of the burn. Mark’s defense attorney objected aggressively, trying to paint Clara as a hysterical, vengeful spouse, but Clara remained calm. She answered every question with unwavering clarity, refusing to break eye contact with the jury. She was no longer the frightened girl crying on the floor.
