Chapter 16: The Echoes of the Past

Clara’s office at the shelter was a sanctuary of soft lighting and warm colors, a deliberate contrast to the harsh, sterile environment of her past. On a rainy Tuesday morning, a young woman named Lily was escorted in. Lily was shivering despite the oversized coat draped over her shoulders, her eyes darting nervously toward the closed door.

Clara recognized that look instantly. It was the hyper-vigilance of a woman who had been trained to expect a blow from any direction.

"You're safe here, Lily," Clara said softly, pouring a cup of chamomile tea and sliding it across the desk. "No one is going to come through that door. You have my word."

Lily wrapped her trembling hands around the warm mug. "He told me no one would believe me," she whispered, a tear slipping down her bruised cheek. "He said he’s too important. That I’m just... crazy."

Clara smiled, a gentle, knowing expression. She rolled up the sleeves of her cardigan and placed her hands flat on the desk, letting the silvery burn scars catch the light.

"They always say that," Clara replied, her voice steady and full of conviction. "They rely on the dark. They rely on making you feel small so they can feel big. But the truth is, their power is an illusion, Lily. And you are so much stronger than you realize."

Lily looked at Clara’s scarred hands, and the frantic pacing of her breathing began to slow. In Clara’s scars, Lily didn't see a victim; she saw a survivor. And for the first time since she had walked through the shelter doors, Lily felt a fragile spark of hope.
