Chapter 13: The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than four hours. When the bailiff announced they had reached a verdict, a heavy, suffocating tension descended upon the courtroom. Clara sat perfectly still beside the prosecutor, her scarred hands folded neatly in her lap. She took a slow, deep breath, steadying her racing heart.

The jurors filed back into the box, their expressions grim and resolute. The foreperson, an older woman with kind eyes, stood up and handed a folded slip of paper to the bailiff, who passed it to the judge.

"On the charge of aggravated assault," the judge read, his voice echoing in the dead silence of the room, "we find the defendant, Mark Davis, guilty."

A collective exhale rippled through the gallery. The judge continued, reading off the remaining charges, including domestic violence and unlawful surveillance. The word guilty struck the air like a gavel each time.

Then, it was Eleanor’s turn. For her role in the attack and her failure to render aid, she was found guilty of being an accessory and of criminal negligence. The haughty matriarch finally cracked, burying her face in her hands and sobbing aloud.

Mark didn't look at his mother, nor did he look at the jury. He simply stared at the polished wooden table in front of him, the reality of his shattered life finally setting in. Clara closed her eyes, letting the immense weight of the past three years slide off her shoulders. She had fought the monster in the dark, dragged him into the light, and won.
