Chapter 7: The Arrest

Mark stood at the head of a long mahogany table in his firm’s glass-walled conference room. He was midway through a high-stakes presentation when the heavy doors swung open. Detective Ramirez stepped inside, flanked by two uniformed officers.
The room fell into a stunned silence. Mark’s face flushed with immediate outrage. "What is the meaning of this?" he demanded, using his most authoritative voice. "I am in the middle of a meeting."

Ramirez did not blink. He walked straight up to Mark, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Mark Davis, you are under arrest for aggravated assault and domestic violence."
Gasps rippled through the seated executives. Mark’s carefully manicured public image shattered in an instant. He tried to protest, his voice pitching into a panicked whisper about misunderstandings and lawyers, but Ramirez turned him around and secured the cuffs. As he was marched through the busy corporate bullpen in full view of his colleagues, Mark finally realized Clara had not just escaped; she had destroyed his entire world.
