Clara didn't take her own SUV; it was equipped with GPS monitoring. Instead, she walked three blocks to a busy intersection and hailed a taxi, handing the driver a fifty-dollar bill.

"Downtown police precinct, please," she said, her voice shaking but resolute.

As the cab pulled away from the affluent, manicured neighborhood, Clara leaned her head against the cool glass of the window. The adrenaline began to wear off, replaced by the deep, pulsing agony in her palms. Every bump in the road sent fresh waves of pain up her arms.

Yet, for the first time in three years, she felt a profound sense of lightness. The towering walls of her luxury prison were shrinking in the rearview mirror. She was terrified of what Mark would do when he found the house empty, but the fear was overshadowed by a fierce instinct for survival. She held the small plastic SD card tightly through the fabric of her pocket. It was her shield and her sword.
