Chapter 8: Healing and Haven

While Mark was being booked into a holding cell, Clara sat on an examination table in the hospital’s burn unit. A specialist carefully cleaned her blistered palms, applying soothing silver sulfadiazine cream and fresh, sterile bandages. The physical pain was intense, but the medical staff's gentle, compassionate care felt entirely foreign to her. She was treated as a human being, not property.

Later that evening, an advocate from a local domestic violence organization drove Clara to a confidential shelter. The sprawling, cold mansion she once lived in was replaced by a modest, brightly painted room with two twin beds.

She sat on the edge of the mattress, listening to the soft hum of conversation from the shared kitchen down the hall. For the first time in three years, she didn't have to monitor the sound of footsteps or brace herself for an unpredictable outburst. Exhausted but safe, Clara lay back on the simple cotton sheets and fell into the first truly deep sleep she had known since her wedding day.
