Chapter 15: Rising from the Ashes

A year passed, bringing with it a vibrant, restorative spring. Clara’s small apartment was now overflowing with life. Potted ferns hung from the ceiling, a rescued tabby cat dozed in the window seat, and colorful abstract paintings—Clara’s newly discovered hobby—adorned the walls.

She poured a cup of coffee and sat at her small kitchen table, reviewing the notes for her morning seminar. Clara had accepted a full-time position as a peer counselor and advocate at the very domestic violence shelter that had taken her in. She spent her days guiding other women through the terrifying, disorienting process of leaving abusive homes.

When new arrivals sat in her office, trembling and ashamed, Clara would often reach across the desk and gently take their hands. She never hid the silvery, textured scars crisscrossing her palms. Instead, she let the women see them. The scars were undeniable proof that the fire didn't have to be the end of the story.

"I know how impossible it feels right now," Clara would tell them, her voice warm and grounded. "But I promise you, there is a whole life waiting for you on the other side of this door."

And for the first time in her life, Clara knew exactly who she was meant to be.
