Chapter 20: Reclaiming the Fire

That evening, Clara hosted a small, intimate dinner party at her apartment. Maria, the shelter director, was there, along with Detective Ramirez, who had become a trusted friend over the years, and Lily, who was busy setting the table with mismatched, colorful plates.

Clara stood in her kitchen, humming softly to the jazz music playing from a small wireless speaker. A large pot of marinara sauce bubbled on the front burner of her gas stove.

There had been a time when just the ambient heat of a kitchen appliance would send Clara into a spiral of panic. For the first year after her escape, she had lived entirely on cold meals and microwave dinners. But slowly, deliberately, she had decided to take the kitchen back.

She reached forward to stir the sauce. The warm steam curled around her wrists, gently kissing the silvery scars on her palms. She didn't flinch. She felt the heat, acknowledged it, and remained perfectly steady. The fire was no longer a weapon used against her; it was just a tool she used to nourish the people she loved.

"Dinner's ready!" Clara called out, carrying a large, steaming bowl of pasta into the dining room.

She set the bowl down in the center of the table. Her friends gathered around, pouring wine and sharing easy, genuine laughter. As they raised their glasses in a toast to the new transition house, Clara looked around the table at the family she had chosen.

She took a sip of her wine and smiled, a deep, resonant peace settling into her bones. The terrified woman crying on the cold kitchen floor was a ghost of the past. Clara Hayes was alive, she was fierce, and her hands were finally entirely her own.
