Chapter 1 - The Fading Echoes of Laughter

The suburban afternoon was bathed in the warm, golden light of late summer. An American flag hung from the front porch, waving lazily in the gentle breeze. Just an hour ago, the front yard had been a chaotic symphony of children’s laughter, popping balloons, and the tearing of wrapping paper. It was Lily’s sixth birthday, and by all accounts, the party had been a massive success.
Now, only scattered debris remained. Deflated balloons, tangled curling ribbons, and greasy paper plates littered the manicured lawn. Sarah, wearing a blue button-down shirt that was now stained with frosting, wiped her brow with the back of her hand. Most of the guests had trickled inside or headed home, leaving only a handful of adults lingering on the porch, sipping iced tea and chatting quietly.
"Lily, time to come inside and wash up!" Sarah called out, her voice carrying over the yard.
She expected to see a flash of pink pajamas darting from behind the oak tree or underneath the porch steps. But there was only silence. Sarah frowned, a tiny prickle of unease forming at the base of her neck. She walked around the side of the house, checking the backyard. Empty.

"Lily?" Sarah called again, louder this time. The unease morphed into a cold, heavy knot in her stomach. She jogged back to the front yard, her eyes scanning the debris. Her daughter wasn't in the house. She wasn't in the yard. The street was quiet.
Panic, sudden and suffocating, seized Sarah’s chest. She began to run.
