Chapter 6 - The White Room

The emergency room was a blur of blinding fluorescent lights and the sharp, sterile scent of antiseptic. As soon as the ambulance bay doors flew open, a team of doctors whisked Lily away down a long corridor. Sarah tried to follow, her heart hammering against her ribs, but a compassionate nurse gently held her back.
"You have to let them work, Mom," the nurse said softly. "They are doing everything they can."

Sarah collapsed into a stiff plastic chair in the waiting area. Her hands, still trembling, were streaked with dirt from the trash bin. She stared at the floor, replaying the horrific discovery over and over in her mind. Who could do such a thing? Lily was the sweetest, most innocent child. The party was supposed to be a joyous occasion, a celebration of life.
She pulled out her phone, her thumb hovering over David’s contact. She needed to know what was happening back at the house. She needed to know who was responsible. But before she could press dial, a doctor in teal scrubs emerged through the swinging double doors.
