Chapter 11 - The Confession

"I didn't mean to!"
The scream tore from Brenda's throat, a jagged sound of pure agony and guilt. She collapsed onto the wooden porch steps, burying her face in her hands.
"I didn't mean to hurt her," Brenda sobbed, rocking back and forth. "I bought them for myself. I left them in my purse on the patio table. Lily asked for a cookie. I didn't think... I just handed it to her."
Officer Evans stepped forward, his expression grave. "And when she collapsed?"
"She just fell over," Brenda cried, looking up with tear-streaked cheeks. "She couldn't breathe. I panicked. I knew Sarah would never forgive me. I thought... I thought if I hid her, I could pretend she just wandered off. I thought she would just wake up. I was so scared. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry!"

David, standing nearby, shook his head in disgust. "You let a little girl stop breathing to save your own reputation."
"Stand up, ma'am," Evans said, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for child endangerment."
