Lily’s eyelashes fluttered. Slowly, groggily, the little girl opened her eyes. The bright hospital lights made her squint, but as her vision cleared, she focused on her mother’s face.
"Mommy?" Lily croaked, her throat dry and raspy from the oxygen mask and the allergic reaction.
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled down Sarah’s face. She leaned forward, carefully pressing a kiss to her daughter’s forehead. All the anger, all the terror of the past few hours melted away, leaving only profound gratitude.
"I'm here, my sweet girl," Sarah whispered, stroking Lily's hair. "Mommy is right here. You're safe now."

Lily offered a weak, tired smile. "I didn't like that cookie, Mommy."
Sarah let out a wet laugh, holding her daughter's hand tighter. "I know, baby. I know. No more cookies for a long time. Just rest now. Everything is going to be alright."
