Chapter 5 - The Ambulance

Within seconds, the screech of tires signaled the arrival of the paramedics. Two EMTs leapt from the ambulance, rushing over with a stretcher and a bright orange medical bag.
"Let us take her, ma'am," a female paramedic said gently but firmly, kneeling beside Sarah.
Reluctantly, Sarah loosened her iron grip on her daughter. The EMTs moved with practiced efficiency, securing a tiny oxygen mask over Lily's face and lifting her onto the stretcher.
"Pulse is thready, let's move!" the lead medic shouted.
Sarah scrambled to her feet, her blue shirt covered in dirt and party icing. "I'm coming with her."
"Get in the back," the paramedic nodded.
Before climbing into the ambulance, Sarah looked back at the yard. Officer Evans had already stepped onto the porch, blocking the steps. David, the man in the beige shirt, gave Sarah a firm nod. "I'll tell them everything I saw, Sarah. Go. Be with Lily."
"No one leaves, Officer," Sarah called out one last time, her voice cutting through the hum of the idling ambulance engine.

"They aren't going anywhere, ma'am. We'll get to the bottom of this," Officer Evans replied, pulling out his notepad.
As the ambulance doors slammed shut, enclosing Sarah in the sterile, brightly lit mobile hospital, she grabbed Lily's tiny, cold hand. The sirens blared to life again, parting the neighborhood traffic. Sarah stared at her daughter's chest, watching the shallow rise and fall, praying for a miracle while swearing a silent oath of justice.
