Chapter 10 - The Cracks Show

Evans walked back to the porch, holding the evidence bag up so the three bystanders could see it.

"Does anyone recognize this?" Evans asked, his tone dropping an octave.

Claire squinted at the bag. "That's a bakery wrapper. But Sarah banned all nuts today. She was very strict about it."

"Exactly," Evans said. "Lily went into anaphylactic shock. Someone gave her this cookie. When she collapsed, instead of calling 911, they hid her in the trash to avoid taking the blame."

Arthur gasped, leaning heavily on his cane. "That is despicable. To leave a child to die over a mistake?"

Brenda’s breathing became shallow. She took a step back, bumping into the porch railing. Her hands were shaking violently. Claire turned to look at her friend, her eyes narrowing.

"Brenda," Claire said slowly. "You left early to go to the bakery this morning. You brought a separate bag with you. And... you were the last one cleaning up the yard before Sarah came outside."
