Chapter 12 - The Voice From The Past.

The old recorder continued playing.

The sound was weak.

Distorted by years of being hidden away.

But Charlotte recognized the voice immediately.

Her father's voice.

A voice she thought she would never hear again.

"Charlotte."

The recording continued.

"If you are listening to this message, then I need you to understand something."

A brief silence followed.

"People will tell you many stories about what happened."

"Some will tell you I was careless."

"Some will tell you I disappeared because I wanted to."

"But none of those stories are true."

Charlotte sat completely still.

Every word felt like a piece of her lost childhood returning.

Her father continued.

"I made one mistake."

"I trusted people because I believed loyalty could not be bought."

"But I was wrong."

Charlotte looked at the old files around her.

Years of secrets.

Years of lies.

All hidden beneath the hotel her family created.

The recording continued.

"Richard Sterling was never satisfied with being a partner."

"He wanted ownership."

"He wanted control."

"But he was not working alone."

Charlotte's expression changed.

She already knew there was another person.

Someone still inside the hotel.

Someone close enough to hide everything.

Her father's voice became quieter.

"There is someone you will not expect."

Charlotte leaned closer.

The recorder suddenly became filled with static.

She hit it gently.

"Please."

She whispered.

"Keep playing."

After several seconds,

the voice returned.

"Charlotte."

"Trust your instincts."

"Look beyond the people who appear powerful."

"The greatest danger is often the person everyone believes is harmless."

Then the recording ended.

The room became silent.

Charlotte stared at the recorder.

The message had created more questions than answers.

Daniel entered the archive room.

He immediately noticed her expression.

"You heard it."

Charlotte nodded.

Daniel looked concerned.

"What did he say?"

Charlotte looked toward the shelves.

"He confirmed everything."

"Richard."

"The betrayal."

"But he still did not reveal the final person."

Daniel was quiet.

Charlotte stood.

"My father wanted me to discover it myself."

The next morning,

the hotel became the center of attention.

News about Charlotte's return had spread.

Reporters gathered outside.

Investors questioned the board.

Employees whispered about the ownership battle.

For the first time in years,

the Valmont Grand Hotel was no longer controlled by silence.

Charlotte walked through the lobby.

The same lobby where she had been pushed aside days earlier.

But everything was different now.

Employees stood respectfully.

Guests recognized her.

The person who had been treated as an outsider was now the person everyone wanted to impress.

But Charlotte did not enjoy the attention.

She knew attention could be dangerous.

Especially when people were hiding something.

Daniel approached her.

"The legal team found something."

Charlotte turned.

"What?"

"The ownership challenge."

"The person who filed it."

She waited.

"Thomas Val."

Charlotte froze.

Her uncle.

The man connected to Richard.

The man Amelia had mentioned.

"He is alive?"

Daniel nodded.

"We found an address."

Charlotte looked toward the entrance.

"So the person who betrayed my family is still out there."

Daniel hesitated.

"Maybe."

Charlotte noticed.

"Maybe?"

Daniel handed her another document.

"There is something strange."

She read it carefully.

The legal challenge was signed by Thomas.

But the authorization was recent.

Very recent.

Charlotte frowned.

"This signature..."

She studied it.

"This is not his usual signature."

Daniel looked surprised.

"You think someone forged it?"

Charlotte nodded.

"I think someone wants us to believe Thomas is the enemy."

The realization changed everything.

The obvious answer might be another trap.

That afternoon,

Charlotte received an unexpected visitor.

A man entered the private office.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying years of regret in his expression.

Charlotte immediately knew who he was.

Thomas Val.

Her uncle.

For a moment,

neither of them spoke.

Then Thomas looked at her.

"You look exactly like your mother."

Charlotte remained cautious.

"You filed a claim against my ownership."

Thomas looked confused.

"No."

The answer came instantly.

"I came here to stop it."

Charlotte studied him.

"Then why does your name appear on the document?"

Thomas looked toward the floor.

"Because someone is using my identity."

"Who?"

Thomas hesitated.

Then he said the name that shocked her.

"Victoria Sterling."

Charlotte's expression changed.

Thomas continued.

"She knows more than she admits."

"She has spent years protecting her father's mistakes."

"But she is not the only one."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"What do you mean?"

Thomas looked at the old hotel walls.

"Your father trusted someone inside this building."

"Someone who was supposed to protect the family."

"Someone who had access to every secret."

Charlotte felt a cold feeling.

"Who?"

Thomas looked directly at her.

"The person standing closest to you."

At that moment,

the office door opened.

Daniel entered.

Thomas looked at him.

Charlotte noticed the sudden silence between them.

And for the first time,

a terrifying thought appeared.

May you like

What if the person helping her uncover the truth...

was also connected to hiding it?
