Chapter 5 - The Letter That Changed Everything.

The sound of disappearing footsteps echoed through the empty hallway.

Charlotte remained still.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the open doorway.

Someone had been there.

Someone had heard everything.

Daniel quickly moved toward the hall.

"I will check."

Charlotte stopped him.

"No."

Daniel looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because whoever was standing there wanted us to know they were listening."

She folded the letter carefully.

"They wanted us to react."

Daniel studied her expression.

The young woman who had entered the hotel days earlier looking exhausted and vulnerable was gone.

In her place stood someone patient.

Someone who understood that every move mattered.

Charlotte looked back at the old office.

"My father knew he was surrounded by people he could not trust."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"And now you are in the same position."

Charlotte looked at him.

"No."

She replied.

"I have one advantage."

"What advantage?"

"I know there is a secret."

Daniel became quiet.

Because he understood.

The most dangerous people were those who believed their secrets were still hidden.

Charlotte returned to the desk.

She opened the remaining envelopes.

Each one contained information her father had collected before his disappearance.

Financial reports.

Private notes.

Copies of agreements.

And names.

Many names.

But one name appeared more often than any other.

Richard Sterling.

Charlotte carefully organized the documents.

"Daniel."

"Yes?"

"Who was Richard Sterling to this hotel?"

The manager looked uncomfortable.

"He was not just an investor."

Charlotte waited.

"He was Alexander's closest partner."

Daniel continued.

"They built the hotel together."

"Then why did my father write that he betrayed him?"

Daniel looked toward the window.

"Because Richard changed."

Charlotte noticed his hesitation.

"Tell me."

Daniel sighed.

"After the hotel became successful, Richard wanted more control."

"Your father believed the hotel should remain a family business."

"But Richard believed power should belong to whoever could take it."

Charlotte looked at the documents again.

"So he started removing my family from the company."

Daniel nodded.

"Slowly."

"Quietly."

"Until almost nobody noticed."

Charlotte closed her eyes for a moment.

The betrayal was not sudden.

It was planned.

Years of careful moves.

Years of people accepting lies because they were easier than facing the truth.

That evening,

a meeting was called in the main conference room.

The board members gathered again.

But this time,

Charlotte entered first.

The room became silent.

She placed several documents on the table.

"I have reviewed the company's history."

Nobody responded.

Charlotte looked around.

"I found serious questions regarding financial decisions made during the past decade."

One board member immediately became defensive.

"Are you accusing us?"

Charlotte remained calm.

"I am asking questions."

Victoria sat at the end of the table.

Her expression was unreadable.

"Questions can damage reputations."

She said.

Charlotte looked at her.

"So can lies."

The room froze.

Victoria leaned back.

"You think you understand everything because you found a few old papers?"

Charlotte shook her head.

"No."

"I think I understand because my father spent his final days trying to warn someone."

Victoria's expression changed slightly.

"Final days?"

Charlotte noticed.

The reaction.

The surprise.

The fear.

She had just learned something important.

Victoria knew more about her father's disappearance than she admitted.

Charlotte slowly approached the table.

"Why did you react to that?"

Victoria quickly recovered.

"I didn't."

Charlotte smiled faintly.

"You did."

The silence became uncomfortable.

Daniel watched carefully.

He knew Charlotte was testing her.

And it was working.

Victoria looked away.

But Charlotte was not finished.

"My father disappeared."

She said.

"And someone benefited from it."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then one of the board members quietly placed a file on the table.

Charlotte looked at it.

"What is this?"

The man avoided her eyes.

"It was found this morning."

Charlotte opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

A security report.

And a handwritten note.

Her heart stopped for a moment.

Because the note was written by her father.

But the date was impossible.

The document was dated three months after Alexander Val was officially declared missing.

Charlotte slowly read the message.

Only one sentence was written.

"Charlotte, if you are reading this, trust nobody inside this hotel."

Her fingers tightened around the paper.

Because for the first time,

she realized something terrifying.

Her father might not have disappeared.

May you like

He might have been trying to come back.

And someone had been desperate enough to stop him.
