Chapter 9 - The Truth Amelia Carried.

The archive room remained completely silent.

Charlotte stared at the woman standing in front of her.

For years,

she had imagined countless possibilities.

She imagined finding answers.

She imagined discovering hidden enemies.

She imagined uncovering the reason her family was torn apart.

But she never imagined seeing someone from her childhood standing in front of her again.

"Amelia..."

Charlotte whispered.

The older woman looked at her with tears forming in her eyes.

"You remember me."

Charlotte slowly nodded.

"How could I forget?"

Amelia Hart had been her mother's closest friend.

She had been the person who stayed with Charlotte during difficult years after her mother was gone.

Then one day,

Amelia disappeared too.

No explanation.

No goodbye.

Just another person who vanished from Charlotte's life.

"I thought you left me."

Charlotte said quietly.

Amelia lowered her eyes.

"I wanted to stay."

"More than anything."

"Then why didn't you?"

Amelia looked toward the old documents surrounding them.

"Because your father asked me to leave."

Charlotte froze.

"My father?"

Amelia nodded.

"He knew someone was watching everyone close to him."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who was watching?"

Amelia looked at him.

Then back at Charlotte.

"Richard Sterling."

The name filled the room.

Charlotte had expected it.

But hearing it again made the betrayal feel more real.

"What did he do?"

Charlotte asked.

Amelia took a deep breath.

"Richard was not satisfied with being your father's partner."

"He wanted everything."

"The hotel."

"The reputation."

"The power."

Charlotte clenched her hands.

"And my father?"

Amelia's expression became painful.

"Your father discovered what Richard was planning."

"What happened next?"

Amelia looked away.

"Alexander tried to expose him."

"But before he could..."

She stopped.

Charlotte stepped closer.

"Before he could what?"

Amelia swallowed.

"Before he could reveal the truth, he disappeared."

Daniel looked shocked.

"You believe Richard was responsible?"

Amelia answered immediately.

"I know he was involved."

The certainty in her voice changed the atmosphere.

Charlotte studied her carefully.

"Then why did you disappear?"

Amelia opened the small bag she carried.

Inside was a collection of old letters.

"I was protecting these."

She handed them to Charlotte.

"Your father wrote them before he vanished."

Charlotte took the letters carefully.

"My father wrote to you?"

Amelia nodded.

"He trusted me because he believed everyone else had been compromised."

Charlotte opened the first letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

But the words were painful.

"Amelia,

If anything happens to me,

please protect Charlotte.

Do not let her believe she was abandoned."

Charlotte stopped reading.

Her eyes filled with emotion.

For years,

she had believed her father chose business over her.

She believed he left without looking back.

But this letter suggested something completely different.

He had been trying to protect her.

"He never abandoned me."

Charlotte whispered.

Amelia shook her head.

"Never."

"He loved you more than anything."

A long silence followed.

Then Charlotte noticed something.

The final letter was sealed differently.

It had a symbol on the envelope.

The same symbol from her father's warning note.

Danger.

She opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Only a few sentences were written.

"Charlotte,

The person who betrayed me is not acting alone.

Trust the person who knows what happened to your mother.

The truth about the hotel is connected to the truth about your family."

Charlotte looked up immediately.

"What does this mean?"

Amelia remained silent.

Daniel noticed.

"Amelia."

The woman looked nervous.

"There is something I never told you."

Charlotte waited.

Amelia took a deep breath.

"Your mother did not leave."

The words felt like a shock.

Charlotte could barely move.

"What?"

"Everyone told me she left."

Amelia shook her head.

"That was the story they created."

"Your mother was trying to uncover the same thing your father was."

Charlotte stared at her.

"The hotel?"

Amelia nodded.

"The betrayal."

"The stolen money."

"The people who wanted control."

Charlotte's heart raced.

Her entire understanding of her childhood was changing.

The people she thought had left her...

may have been fighting for her.

Then Amelia reached into her bag again.

She removed a small envelope.

"This belonged to your mother."

Charlotte looked at it.

Her name was written on the front.

Not by her father.

By her mother.

Charlotte touched the envelope with shaking hands.

After all these years,

she was finally holding something that came directly from the woman she thought she had lost forever.

But before she could open it,

the lights inside the archive room suddenly flickered.

Daniel turned toward the door.

Someone was outside.

A shadow moved across the hallway.

Amelia's face changed instantly.

"No."

Charlotte looked at her.

"What?"

Amelia whispered.

"They found me."

The door handle began to turn.

Someone was trying to enter.

And whoever was outside knew exactly where they were.
