Chapter 13 - The Last Hidden Betrayal.

The room became completely silent.
Charlotte looked from Thomas to Daniel.
Two men.
Two different stories.
Two people connected to her family's past.
And suddenly,
she was no longer certain who she could trust.
Daniel noticed the doubt in her eyes.
"Charlotte."
His voice was quiet.
"You know me."
Charlotte looked at him.
"I thought I did."
The words hurt him.
But he did not argue.
Because he understood.
After everything she had discovered,
trust was no longer something she could give easily.
Thomas stepped forward.
"You cannot blame her."
Daniel looked at him.
"And you expect her to believe you?"
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"No."
"I expect her to find the truth."
Charlotte remained silent.
Because that was exactly what she had been doing from the beginning.
Finding the truth.
Not revenge.
Not power.
The truth.
She turned toward Thomas.
"Tell me everything."
Thomas took a deep breath.
"When Alexander discovered Richard was stealing from the company, he planned to expose him."
Charlotte listened carefully.
"But Richard knew."
"He realized your father was close to revealing everything."
Thomas paused.
"So he searched for someone who could help him."
"Someone who had access."
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
Thomas continued.
"Someone inside the hotel."
Daniel immediately responded.
"I was never part of that."
Thomas looked at him.
"I know."
Charlotte noticed.
The answer came too quickly.
Not with anger.
With certainty.
Thomas was not accusing Daniel.
He was warning her about someone else.
"Then who?"
Thomas looked around the office.
"The person who controlled the records."
"The person who approved the transfers."
"The person who made sure nobody questioned the missing money."
Charlotte waited.
Thomas finally said:
"Your father's personal assistant."
Charlotte frowned.
"Emily?"
Thomas nodded.
Charlotte remembered her.
A quiet woman who had worked beside her father for years.
Someone nobody suspected.
Someone who always seemed invisible.
"Where is she now?"
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
"She disappeared after Alexander disappeared."
Charlotte closed her eyes.
Another person gone.
Another piece missing.
That evening,
Charlotte, Daniel, and Thomas returned to the archive room.
They searched through every document connected to Emily.
At first,
they found nothing.
Then Charlotte noticed something strange.
One folder had been placed differently from the others.
She pulled it out.
Inside were copies of private messages.
Messages between Emily and Richard Sterling.
Daniel read the first page.
His expression changed.
"They were working together."
Thomas nodded.
"Yes."
Charlotte continued reading.
The messages showed years of planning.
Small actions.
Small decisions.
Nothing obvious.
But together,
they created a pattern.
Emily had slowly moved information away from Alexander.
She had controlled communication.
She had delayed reports.
She had protected Richard.
But then Charlotte found something unexpected.
A final message.
Sent one day before her father's disappearance.
Richard wrote:
"Everything is ready."
Emily replied:
"He knows."
Charlotte stopped.
Daniel looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
Charlotte turned the page.
There was another message.
Richard:
"Then we move tonight."
Emily:
"No."
A pause.
"I cannot do this anymore."
Everyone became silent.
Charlotte continued.
The final message from Emily was only one sentence.
"I will tell Charlotte the truth if anything happens."
Thomas looked surprised.
"She changed sides."
Charlotte nodded slowly.
"She realized what she had done."
Daniel looked at the date.
"That message was sent the night your father disappeared."
Charlotte's heart sank.
Because now a new possibility appeared.
Maybe Emily was not the person who destroyed her family.
Maybe she was the person who tried to save it.
Suddenly,
the archive room lights turned off.
Again.
The same darkness.
The same warning.
But this time,
Charlotte was ready.
"Nobody move."
She said.
A sound came from behind the shelves.
Someone was inside.
Thomas whispered.
"We are not alone."
Charlotte reached for the flashlight.
The shadow moved quickly.
Daniel followed.
They reached the hallway.
But whoever was there was gone.
Only one thing remained.
A small envelope placed on the floor.
Charlotte picked it up.
Her name was written on the front.
Not by her father.
Not by Amelia.
By Emily.
Inside was a single note.
"Charlotte,
I know who really betrayed your family.
But the person you trust most is not who you think."
Charlotte stared at the words.
Her eyes slowly moved toward Daniel.
Because once again,
May you like
the truth was closer than ever.
But it was hidden behind the people standing beside her.
