Chapter 4 - The Shadow Of The Sterling Family.

The old photograph remained on the conference table.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to speak.

The image was simple.

A young Alexander Val stood proudly beside the original founders of the Valmont Grand Hotel.

Standing next to him was Richard Sterling.

A man Charlotte had only heard about through old conversations.

A man who had once been considered her father's closest friend.

But now,

his name carried a different meaning.

A question.

A suspicion.

A warning.

Charlotte slowly touched the edge of the photograph.

"My father trusted him."

Daniel nodded.

"More than anyone."

Charlotte looked up.

"Then why is his family trying to control my hotel?"

The room became uncomfortable.

Several executives avoided her eyes.

That reaction confirmed what she already suspected.

They knew something.

They had known for years.

Charlotte closed the folder.

"I want every financial record from the last ten years."

One executive immediately reacted.

"That may take time."

Charlotte looked at him calmly.

"I am aware."

She paused.

"But hiding information will take much longer."

The executive became silent.

Victoria Sterling watched Charlotte carefully.

There was no anger in her expression anymore.

Only calculation.

"You seem very confident."

Victoria said.

Charlotte turned toward her.

"I spent years being underestimated."

She replied.

"Confidence is what I had left when nobody believed me."

Victoria smiled slightly.

"Be careful."

"Power changes people."

Charlotte stood.

"So does losing it."

The tension between them filled the room.

Daniel watched the exchange carefully.

He had known Victoria Sterling for many years.

She was charming when she needed something.

Friendly when people could help her.

But dangerous when someone challenged her.

And Charlotte had just become the biggest challenge she had ever faced.

Later that afternoon,

Charlotte walked alone through the private section of the hotel.

The hallway was quiet.

Unlike the public areas,

this part of the building had remained untouched for years.

At the end of the corridor was an old office.

Her father's office.

Daniel unlocked the door.

The moment Charlotte entered,

she stopped.

Everything remained almost exactly the same.

The wooden desk.

The old books.

The family photographs.

The chair where her father had spent countless nights building his dream.

Charlotte slowly walked inside.

For the first time since returning,

her confidence disappeared.

She was no longer the owner.

She was a daughter remembering her father.

"He loved this place."

Daniel said quietly.

Charlotte nodded.

"He loved people more."

She looked around.

"That is why he trusted them."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Because he knew that trust had been used against him.

Charlotte opened the desk drawer.

Inside were several envelopes.

All sealed.

All marked with dates from years earlier.

Daniel looked surprised.

"I have never seen those."

Charlotte picked up the first envelope.

"My father hid them."

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The writing was familiar.

Her father's handwriting.

Charlotte read the first few lines.

Then her expression changed.

Daniel noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Charlotte did not answer.

She continued reading.

The letter was not about business.

It was about fear.

Alexander Val had written that someone inside the company was secretly moving assets away from the hotel.

Someone he trusted.

Someone close.

Someone who knew exactly how to hide their actions.

Charlotte reached the final sentence.

Her hands became still.

Daniel looked concerned.

"What did he write?"

Charlotte slowly placed the letter on the desk.

Her voice was quiet.

"My father knew he was being betrayed."

The room felt colder.

"And he knew the person responsible."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Who?"

Charlotte looked down at the signature.

Then she said the name that changed everything.

"Richard Sterling."

At that exact moment,

a sound came from the hallway.

The office door moved slightly.

Someone had been listening.

Charlotte turned immediately.

But the hallway was empty.

Only the sound of footsteps disappearing into the distance remained.

Someone inside the hotel knew she had found the letter.

And now,

they knew Charlotte was getting closer to the truth.
