Chapter 7 - The Stranger In The Dark.

The darkness inside the hidden office felt endless.
Charlotte stood completely still.
She could hear her own breathing.
She could hear Daniel moving carefully beside her.
But there was another sound.
A slow movement near the doorway.
Someone was there.
Someone who had followed them.
Daniel whispered.
"Stay behind me."
Charlotte quietly shook her head.
"No."
Daniel looked surprised.
"This is not the time to prove yourself."
Charlotte looked toward the darkness.
"I am not trying to prove myself."
She held the letter tightly.
"I am trying to find out who is afraid of the truth."
The sound stopped.
For several seconds,
nothing happened.
Then the emergency lights turned on.
The room was covered in a faint red glow.
The doorway was empty.
Whoever had been there was gone.
Daniel immediately checked the hallway.
Nobody.
No footsteps.
No movement.
Only silence.
Charlotte walked toward the door.
On the floor was a small object.
A black metal key.
She picked it up.
Daniel recognized it instantly.
"That key..."
"What?"
Daniel looked uneasy.
"It belongs to the old archive room."
Charlotte looked at him.
"Where is that?"
"Below the hotel."
She frowned.
"I thought there was no basement level."
Daniel hesitated.
"There is."
"Then why was it removed from the official records?"
Daniel did not answer.
Because they both knew the reason.
Someone wanted it forgotten.
The next morning,
Charlotte returned to her father's private office.
She placed the key on the desk.
Daniel stood across from her.
"I need to tell you something."
Charlotte looked up.
"About the archive room?"
Daniel nodded.
"When your father was alive, he kept records there."
"What kind of records?"
"Everything."
Daniel paused.
"Contracts."
"Private agreements."
"Information about investors."
Charlotte understood.
A room full of evidence.
A room that could explain everything.
Including why her father disappeared.
"Why did nobody search for it?"
Daniel looked away.
"Because after your father's disappearance, Richard Sterling ordered the entire west wing closed."
Charlotte's eyes narrowed.
"Richard had that much power?"
Daniel nodded.
"More than people realized."
Charlotte walked toward the window.
Outside, the hotel continued operating normally.
Guests laughed.
Cars arrived.
Employees worked.
Nobody knew that beneath the beautiful surface was a history built on secrets.
"I want access to the archive room tonight."
Daniel looked concerned.
"That could be dangerous."
Charlotte turned.
"Dangerous for who?"
Daniel remained silent.
Charlotte continued.
"I spent years believing I lost my family."
She looked at the hotel.
"But now I know someone took pieces of it away from me."
Her voice became firmer.
"I am not leaving until I know why."
That evening,
Charlotte and Daniel entered the lower levels of the hotel.
The elevator stopped below the official floors.
The doors opened slowly.
A forgotten corridor appeared.
The walls were old.
The lights flickered.
The luxurious hotel above felt like another world.
Daniel inserted the black key into an old lock.
The door opened.
Inside was a large archive room.
Thousands of documents filled the shelves.
Charlotte walked slowly through the room.
Her father had preserved everything.
Every decision.
Every agreement.
Every secret.
She found a locked drawer marked with her initials.
C.V.
Daniel looked surprised.
"Your father prepared this for you."
Charlotte opened it.
Inside was a small envelope.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed three people.
Her father.
Richard Sterling.
And another person.
A person Charlotte had never seen before.
A woman standing beside them.
Charlotte turned the photograph over.
A handwritten note was attached.
"She knows the truth."
Daniel looked confused.
"Who?"
Charlotte stared at the unknown woman.
Then she noticed something.
The woman was wearing a necklace.
A necklace Charlotte remembered from childhood.
A necklace that belonged to her mother.
Her hands became still.
Because her mother had supposedly lost it years ago.
But now,
it appeared in a photograph connected to her father's secret investigation.
Charlotte whispered.
"This changes everything."
Daniel looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
Charlotte slowly placed the photograph on the table.
"My father was not only investigating the company."
She looked toward the old documents surrounding them.
"He was investigating what happened to my family."
At that moment,
a message appeared on Daniel's phone.
One sentence.
No name.
No number.
Just a warning.
"Stop searching before you lose what remains."
Charlotte read the message.
Instead of fear,
she felt something else.
Determination.
Because whoever sent it had made one mistake.
May you like
They had confirmed one thing.
Charlotte was getting closer.
