Chapter 6 - The Message From The Past.

The conference room remained silent after Charlotte finished reading the note.

Nobody dared to interrupt her.

The message was short.

Only one sentence.

But it carried the weight of years of unanswered questions.

"Charlotte, if you are reading this, trust nobody inside this hotel."

She read it again.

And again.

Her father's handwriting brought back memories she had tried to bury.

The way he used to write notes for her before business trips.

The way he always ended letters with the same words.

Stay strong.

But this message was different.

This was not a father's goodbye.

This was a warning.

Daniel slowly approached.

"Charlotte."

She looked up.

"Where was this found?"

The board member who placed the file on the table cleared his throat.

"In an old storage room beneath the west wing."

Charlotte frowned.

"The west wing has been closed for years."

"Exactly."

Daniel replied.

"Nobody should have been there."

Charlotte looked at the document again.

"Then someone wanted this to be found."

The room became tense.

Victoria crossed her arms.

"Or someone wanted to create a dramatic story."

Charlotte turned toward her.

"You think my father's final message is a story?"

Victoria's expression hardened.

"I think emotions can make people believe things that are not true."

Charlotte studied her.

"And I think fear makes people deny things they already know."

The two women stared at each other.

Neither looked away.

The conflict between them was no longer about appearance.

It was about control.

After the meeting ended,

Charlotte stayed behind with Daniel.

The documents were spread across the table.

Every page represented another piece of a puzzle.

"I need access to the west wing."

Charlotte said.

Daniel immediately looked concerned.

"That area has been locked for a long time."

"Why?"

"Officially?"

Daniel paused.

"There were renovation issues."

Charlotte waited.

"And unofficially?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Your father used that area for private meetings."

Charlotte looked surprised.

"Private meetings?"

"Yes."

"With who?"

Daniel hesitated.

"People he did not want others to know about."

Charlotte understood.

Her father had been searching for the truth before he disappeared.

And he had been careful enough to hide his investigation.

That evening,

Charlotte and Daniel entered the west wing.

The hallway was darker than the rest of the hotel.

Dust covered the furniture.

Old paintings leaned against the walls.

The luxury of the main hotel seemed miles away.

Charlotte ran her fingers across an old wooden door.

"This place was abandoned intentionally."

Daniel unlocked the room.

Inside was a small office.

Nothing like her father's main office.

No expensive furniture.

No decorations.

Only shelves filled with files.

Charlotte stepped inside.

Her instincts immediately told her this was important.

Daniel turned on the lights.

The room revealed dozens of boxes.

Each labeled with dates.

Each carefully organized.

Charlotte opened the nearest box.

Inside were financial records.

Private contracts.

And newspaper articles.

She picked up one article.

The headline made her freeze.

"Valmont Grand Founder Disappears During Business Investigation."

Charlotte stared.

"Business investigation?"

Daniel looked confused.

"I thought the police report said it was an accident."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Who told you that?"

Daniel became quiet.

Because he suddenly realized something.

The story everyone had accepted might have been false.

Charlotte searched through more documents.

Then she found another envelope.

This one had her name written on it.

Not the hotel name.

Not the company.

Her name.

Charlotte Val.

Her hands trembled slightly.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

"Dear Charlotte."

She stopped breathing for a moment.

Her father's voice seemed to return through the words.

"If you have found this room, then the people who tried to hide the truth have failed."

Charlotte continued reading.

"My mistake was believing loyalty was stronger than ambition."

Daniel watched her expression change.

"What does it say?"

Charlotte looked up.

Her eyes carried a mixture of sadness and determination.

"My father knew someone close to him was responsible."

She looked back at the letter.

"And he left a clue."

Daniel stepped closer.

"What clue?"

Charlotte turned the paper around.

At the bottom of the letter was a symbol.

A small mark she recognized from childhood.

A symbol her father used only for one purpose.

To identify something that could never be trusted.

Charlotte whispered.

"This symbol means danger."

Before Daniel could respond,

the lights suddenly went out.

The room fell into darkness.

A few seconds passed.

Then Charlotte heard something.

A quiet movement near the doorway.

May you like

Someone was inside.

Someone who did not want them to continue searching.
