Chapter 14: The Courtroom

Three weeks later, the atmosphere in the downtown courthouse was a stark contrast to the warmth of the penthouse. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead in the sterile, wood-paneled room. Julian sat beside Sarah at the plaintiff's table, his posture rigid and commanding. He was in his element, a former prosecutor who knew exactly how to dismantle a threat in this very room.

Across the aisle, Eleanor sat slumped in a standard-issue orange jumpsuit. Her wrists were shackled to the heavy oak table. The wild fury that had fueled her on the rooftop was entirely gone, replaced by a hollow, defeated stare. The weight of her actions had finally crushed her.

The presiding judge, a stern man with silver hair, adjusted his glasses as he looked over the towering stack of evidence files—security footage, witness testimonies, and the damning cell phone records connecting her to the hired infiltrator.

"Given the severity of the charges, which include felony child endangerment, kidnapping, and aggravated assault," the judge's voice boomed through the quiet room, "this court finds the defendant to be an imminent danger to the minor child, Leo."

Sarah reached out, sliding her hand into Julian’s. He squeezed her fingers tightly, his eyes never leaving the judge.

"I am hereby issuing a permanent, lifetime restraining order against the defendant," the judge continued, slamming his gavel down with a sharp crack. "Furthermore, all temporary guardianship rights, visitation privileges, and financial controls are permanently terminated. You will await your criminal trial in state custody without bail."

Eleanor didn't even flinch as the bailiffs pulled her to her feet and escorted her through the side door. She didn't look back. The heavy door clicked shut, severing her from their lives forever. Sarah exhaled, a profound weight lifting off her chest.
