Chapter 15: The Adoption

Six months passed, bringing a gentle spring breeze and a completely different kind of courtroom.
The heavy oak doors swung open, and Leo practically skipped down the center aisle. He was dressed in a sharp, perfectly tailored navy blue suit—no borrowed jackets, no stains, just a bright, beaming smile. Sarah walked proudly beside him, holding a small bouquet of wildflowers.
They approached the bench where Julian was already waiting, chatting warmly with the family court judge. Sunlight streamed through the tall, arched windows, bathing the room in a golden, hopeful light.
"Well," the judge said, smiling down at the trio. "I have reviewed all the paperwork. Background checks are pristine, the character references are glowing, and, most importantly, the consent is unanimous."
The judge leaned forward, looking directly at Leo. "Young man, do you understand what we are doing here today?"
"Yes, Your Honor," Leo said clearly, his voice steady. "Julian is going to be my real dad."
"I certainly am," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. The judge slid a formal document across the polished wood, offering Julian a heavy silver fountain pen. Julian didn't hesitate. With three swift, decisive strokes, he signed his name on the final line.
"By the authority vested in me," the judge announced, a wide smile breaking across her face, "I now pronounce this adoption final and complete."
Bang.
The sound of the gavel was joyous. Leo immediately spun around and threw his arms around Julian’s waist. Julian dropped to one knee, wrapping the boy in a fierce, loving embrace.
"I love you, Dad," Leo whispered into his shoulder.

Julian closed his eyes, pulling Sarah into the hug as well. "I love you too, son."
A few minutes later, the heavy courthouse doors pushed open, and the new family stepped out together. The bright afternoon sunshine washed over them as they walked down the stone steps hand in hand, leaving the shadows of the past behind them, entirely free.
