Chapter 3: The Interrogation

Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the venue's grand entrance. Two police cruisers idled in the driveway. Julian, a former city prosecutor, stood with the lead detective in the security control room.

"Watch this," Julian instructed, pointing to the monitor.

The black-and-white security footage played. It clearly showed Eleanor aggressively grabbing Leo by the arm, shoving him into a catering cart—spilling the red wine on his shirt—and dragging him down the corridor. She then shoved him into a room and deadbolted it from the outside.

"That’s kidnapping and child endangerment," the detective stated, nodding. "We have enough."

Outside, Eleanor sat in the back of a cruiser, her hands cuffed behind her back. The officer had left the door open for air. Before they could confiscate her belongings, Eleanor managed to contort her body to reach her smartwatch. She tapped a speed-dial number with her nose.

"They got me," she hissed into her wrist, her eyes locked on the venue doors. "Go in through the kitchen. Don't let them finish the reception."

The call disconnected just as the officer slammed the cruiser door shut.
