Chapter 13 - The Ground Floor

Months turned into a year. The rhythm of the lobby became Brandon’s new heartbeat. The transition had not been easy. There were days when his feet ached, and his pride stung as former peers walked past his desk with sympathetic, sometimes mocking, glances. But Brandon swallowed his ego. He learned the intricate, invisible ballet of the floor staff—the bellhops, the housekeepers, the valets.
He discovered that Maria, the head of housekeeping, had a son applying to college. He learned that David, the night auditor, was a jazz musician. When he had been the General Manager, these people were just names on a payroll spreadsheet. Now, they were his teammates. He realized how disconnected he had been sitting in his mahogany office, prioritizing VIPs and profit margins over the very people who made the hotel function.
He no longer hid behind a title. When a guest was unreasonable or angry, Brandon didn't pass the buck. He stood at the front lines, absorbing the frustration with a calm, empathetic demeanor that slowly began to earn him the genuine respect of his colleagues.
