Chapter 19 - The Summons

Two days later, as the city slowly dug itself out of the snow, Brandon received a message to report to the manager's office. He walked down the familiar hallway, the memories of that disastrous gala night flashing through his mind. He knocked twice and opened the heavy mahogany door.
Eleanor Vance sat behind the desk. She looked up, closing a file folder.
"Have a seat, Brandon," she said.
Brandon sat down in the guest chair. He felt no anxiety, no need to perform or impress. He was simply present.

"I've read Marcus's reports," Eleanor began, folding her hands. "And I saw what you did the night of the blizzard. You managed a crisis with extraordinary grace, leadership, and, most importantly, empathy. You didn't do it because you were the boss. You did it because it was the right thing to do."
"I just wanted to make sure everyone was safe, Ms. Vance," Brandon replied honestly.
