Chapter 1 - The Missing Heirloom

The Crystal Ballroom of the Harrington Estate was a vision of old money and untouchable privilege. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, fractured glow over the marble floors, illuminating the sea of designer tuxedos and expensive evening gowns. It was an engagement party for the city’s elite, and Sarah, dressed in a modest but elegant teal v-neck gown, was doing her best to remain invisible. She had only been invited out of a begrudging familial obligation; she was a distant cousin to the groom, Julian.

Beside her stood her eight-year-old daughter, Lily. Dressed in a pristine white dress with a matching ribbon in her hair, Lily was mesmerized by the sparkling lights and the string quartet playing in the corner. She held tightly to her mother’s hand, perfectly behaved.

The serene atmosphere shattered when the music abruptly stopped. Julian, the groom-to-be, stood at the front of the room, his face flushed with a terrifying, unpredictable rage. The microphone in his hand emitted a sharp screech.

"Someone in this room is a thief," Julian's voice boomed, dripping with venom. The crowd murmured in shock. "My grandfather’s vintage gold watch, the one I had on the podium just moments ago, is gone."

Julian’s eyes darted around the room before locking onto the quiet corner where Sarah and Lily stood. He marched down the steps, his fists clenched at his sides. Sarah instinctively pulled Lily closer, a knot of dread forming in her stomach as Julian bypassed the wealthy socialites and stopped directly in front of her terrified little girl.
