Chapter 15 - The Video Evidence

The turning point of the trial came on the second day when the prosecution introduced Exhibit A: the security footage from the Harrington Estate's Crystal Ballroom. The lights in the courtroom dimmed as a large monitor was wheeled to the center of the floor.

The jury watched in absolute silence. First, they saw Julian deliberately slip the gold watch into his own jacket. A collective murmur of disgust rippled through the jury box. Then, the video fast-forwarded to the confrontation.

Even without audio, the violence of the act was shocking. The jury watched Julian heave the heavy podium and slam it onto the marble. They saw the wood splinter and explode outward. They watched the terrified little girl flinch, clutch her mother, and the subsequent panic as blood bloomed on her white ribbon.

Ms. Davis paused the footage right as Eleanor Harrington stepped into the frame, her face twisted in a sneer as she dismissed the bleeding child.

"The defense claims this was a mistake born of momentary panic," Ms. Davis told the jury. "But the video shows premeditation, explosive violence, and a complete, chilling disregard for a child's safety."

In the gallery, Eleanor stared at her lap, her face burning with shame as the entire courtroom witnessed the undeniable truth of her family's cruelty.
