Chapter 6 - The Emergency Room

The fluorescent lights of the emergency room were a harsh contrast to the soft, opulent glow of the Harrington ballroom. Sarah sat on the edge of the stiff hospital bed, holding Lily’s small hand. A kind-faced pediatrician was finishing up, carefully placing a butterfly bandage over the laceration near Lily’s hairline.

"You're a very brave little girl," the doctor smiled, offering Lily a bright red sticker. "No stitches needed, but she will have a mild headache for a few days. Keep an eye on her."

"Thank you, Doctor," Sarah said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline still coursing through her veins.

Once they were alone, Lily looked up, her blue eyes still puffy from crying. "Mommy, why was that man so mad at me? I didn't take his watch."

Sarah’s heart ached. She gently brushed a stray curl from her daughter’s forehead, careful to avoid the bandage. "I know you didn't, sweetie. That man was very wrong, and he was trying to blame someone else for his own mistakes. But I promise you, he will never yell at you or hurt you ever again."

Lily nodded, trusting her mother completely. As Sarah held her daughter, a uniformed police officer stepped into the curtained partition, holding a notepad. It was time to make sure Julian Harrington paid for what he had done.
