Chapter 9 - The Walls Close In

The following morning, Detective Miller sat in an interrogation room across from Julian and his high-priced defense attorney. Julian looked exhausted, his arrogant veneer entirely stripped away.
Miller pressed a button on a remote, and a flat-screen TV on the wall flickered to life. It showed crisp, high-definition footage of the ballroom.
"Let's review the tape, Mr. Harrington," Miller said dryly.
On the screen, Julian was seen standing alone by the guestbook podium. He unclasped the vintage gold watch from his wrist, glanced around to ensure no one was looking, and quickly slipped it into the inner breast pocket of his tuxedo jacket. A few minutes later, Sarah and Lily walked past the area. Julian then grabbed the microphone and began his tirade.

"The watch was recovered from your coat pocket in the coatroom during the search last night," Miller stated, turning off the TV. "You fabricated a felony, attempted insurance fraud, and recklessly endangered a minor, resulting in physical injury."
Julian stared at the blank screen, swallowing hard. His lawyer placed a hand on his arm, silently instructing him not to speak. But the silence in the room was deafening. There was no escaping this.
