Chapter 11 - Sabrina

Claire read the message again.

Someone Daniel already tried to erase.

Maya immediately searched public records for Sabrina Cole.

There was no death certificate.

No obvious lawsuit.

No active professional profile either.

It was as if Sabrina had stepped out of public life.

Leon traced the anonymous number through a privacy service.

The trail ended at a prepaid account purchased in Lisbon.

Claire remembered Daniel claiming Sabrina moved overseas.

"Could it be her?"

Maya asked.

Claire did not answer.

Instead, she typed another message.

If you are Sabrina, prove it.

The response came ten minutes later.

Your father kept a brass compass in the top right drawer of his desk.

Daniel wanted to throw it away after the funeral.

You stopped him.

Claire's breath caught.

Very few people knew about the compass.

Her father had carried it during his first years traveling for the company.

Sabrina had once worked directly with him before Daniel became chief executive.

Claire typed again.

Where are you?

Lisbon.

Why are you helping me?

This time the answer took longer.

Because I helped Daniel once.

I have regretted it every day since.

Claire showed Maya.

Within an hour, they arranged a secure video call.

Sabrina appeared on screen from a plain apartment with white walls.

She looked older than in the yacht photograph, but unmistakably the same woman.

"Claire."

Her voice was steady.

"I should have contacted you years ago."

Claire did not soften.

"Start with Blue Harbor."

Sabrina nodded.

She explained that Daniel had first proposed the offshore structure as a legitimate estate-planning vehicle.

Sabrina helped design early drafts.

Then Daniel began asking how much authority could be shifted without clearly telling Claire what she was surrendering.

Sabrina refused.

Daniel threatened to accuse her of unauthorized trading.

"Did he have evidence?"

"He manufactured enough to scare me."

Sabrina said she resigned and left the country rather than fight him.

Before leaving, she copied several files.

Among them were early Blue Harbor drafts and voice recordings.

Claire leaned closer.

"Why wait until now?"

Sabrina looked ashamed.

"Fear."

"Then I saw Kelly in a photograph from the airport."

"I realized he was running the same pattern again."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"You sent the first text before we boarded."

"Yes."

"How did you know where we were?"

Sabrina hesitated.

"Kelly told me."

Claire stared at the screen.

Maya leaned forward.

"Kelly said she did not send the messages."

"She didn't."

Sabrina replied.

"But she contacted me three weeks ago."

Claire felt the room go silent.

Kelly had not been merely trapped.

She had been planning something.

Sabrina continued.

"Kelly found my old messages on the tablet."

"She reached out because she suspected Daniel was lying to her."

"She wanted proof."

Claire's voice hardened.

"Did she want to protect me?"

Sabrina gave a sad smile.

"At first?"

"No."

"She wanted enough leverage to force Daniel to leave you and give her the shares he promised."

Claire closed her eyes.

Of course.

Even the warning had begun as someone else's bargaining chip.

Sabrina's expression changed.

"But something happened after she contacted me."

"She found out what Daniel planned to do to her once Claire signed."

Claire opened her eyes.

"What did he plan?"

May you like

Sabrina looked directly into the camera.

"He planned to make Kelly the criminal."
