Chapter 6 - The Woman in White

Claire entered Mercer Atlantic's boardroom at eight the next morning.
She had not slept.
She had changed into a cream pantsuit, tied her brown hair back, and carried only her phone, passport, and a thin folder of evidence.
Daniel appeared by video from Saint Aurelia.
His tropical background made the confrontation feel obscene.
Kelly was not visible.
Evelyn called the meeting to order.
"Daniel, this is an investigatory session."
"You remain chief executive for the moment, but certain financial authorities are suspended."
Daniel's face hardened.
"On the basis of what?"
Leon projected the expense report.
"These transactions."
Daniel barely glanced at them.
"Client development."
"Which client lives in Kelly Vaughn's Miami condominium?"
Silence.
Daniel recovered quickly.
"Temporary executive housing."
Claire spoke for the first time.
"For your secretary?"
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
"Claire, if you want to discuss our marriage, we can do that privately."
"We're discussing my company."
The words startled even Claire.
Daniel's expression changed.
He had spent years saying our company when he wanted her loyalty and my company when he wanted control.
Now he understood that she had noticed.
Maya presented the recapitalization draft.
"Did you intend to ask Claire to sign this at Saint Aurelia?"
Daniel leaned back.
"It was one option under consideration."
"Did you tell her it was a tax simplification?"
"That is part of what it does."
"Does it also dilute the voting power of her trust?"
Daniel paused.
"Technically."
Evelyn's face hardened.
"Technically?"
The boardroom doors opened.
A security officer entered carrying a sealed laptop bag.
"This was delivered for Ms. Mercer."
Claire frowned.
There was no return name.
Maya opened the bag carefully.
Inside was a company laptop assigned to Kelly.
A sticky note was attached.
I am done protecting him.
Daniel's face disappeared from the screen for a moment.
When he returned, he looked furious.
"Where is Kelly?"
Claire looked toward Maya.
Maya whispered, "Do not answer."
The meeting continued.
Leon connected Kelly's laptop to an isolated forensic system.
Within minutes, he found a folder labeled S.A. PERSONAL.
It contained drafts of the restructuring documents, resort itineraries, private invoices, and dozens of messages between Daniel and Kelly.
Some were intimate.
Others were not.
One message made Evelyn sit forward.
Daniel had written it three months earlier.
Once Claire signs, we stop needing board permission.
Kelly had replied.
And if she refuses?
Daniel's answer was colder than anything Claire had expected.
Then I make sure the board believes she is unstable and remove her as trustee.
Claire read the line twice.
Her hands did not shake.
That surprised her.
Daniel's voice came through the screen.
"Private messages taken out of context are not evidence."
Claire finally looked at him.
"What context makes that sentence better?"
He said nothing.
At that exact moment, Claire's phone vibrated.
The anonymous number had returned.
Do not trust Kelly yet.
Claire's eyes moved to the sealed laptop.

A second message appeared.
She helped him build the trap.
