Chapter 9 - The Flight Home

Daniel booked the first flight back to New York.
He traveled alone.
Kelly had already taken a separate route through Miami, and he could not reach her.
The black encrypted drive remained inside the lining of his carry-on.
He considered destroying it in the airport restroom.
He even held it over a metal trash bin for several seconds.
Then he stopped.
The drive contained records that could damage him.
It also contained records that could damage other people.
That made it leverage.
Daniel had always preferred leverage to innocence.
On the plane, he drafted three different messages to Claire.
He deleted all of them.
Apology sounded weak.
Anger sounded guilty.
Love sounded absurd.
By the time he landed, he had chosen strategy.
He would frame the restructuring as aggressive but lawful.
He would admit the affair.
He would call the expenses sloppy.
He would blame Kelly for manipulating records.
He would survive.
Claire was already preparing for that story.
Leon found an unusual login from Daniel's credentials during the exact hour Kelly's laptop folder had been copied.
But the login originated from Saint Aurelia.
Daniel had been there.
"So he could have planted the folder."
Claire said.
Leon nodded.
"Or he could have accessed it after Kelly created it."
"We still need more."
Maya entered the room carrying a printed statement.
"Preston Shaw is cooperating."
Claire read the first page.
Preston admitted that Daniel had asked him to prepare Blue Harbor documents.
He also admitted that Daniel repeatedly described Claire as disengaged and likely to approve anything presented as tax planning.
Most importantly, Preston had preserved a voicemail.
Maya played it.
Daniel's voice filled the room.
Keep the explanation simple.
She gets nervous when things sound complicated.
Tell her it protects the family.
If she asks whether it changes control, say no practical change.
Claire felt something inside her finally break.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
It was the last fragile explanation she had been making for him.
Maybe he was selfish but not cruel.
Maybe he was unfaithful but not calculating.
Maybe he took her for granted but still respected her.
The voicemail erased every maybe.
Her phone rang.
Daniel had landed.
"We need to talk before the board meeting."
Claire answered calmly.
"Agreed."
"Come to the penthouse."
"No."
"Claire."
"My lawyer's office."
"Tomorrow at nine."
Daniel's silence sharpened.
"You are turning our marriage into litigation."
Claire looked at Maya.
"You turned my signature into a business plan."
She ended the call.
That evening, the doorman at Claire's hotel called her room.
A woman named Kelly Vaughn was downstairs.
Claire nearly refused to see her.
Then the anonymous number sent another message.
Hear her out, but ask about Miami.
Claire stared at the screen.
The sender knew Kelly had arrived before the receptionist had even called upstairs.
That changed everything.
Whoever was sending the messages was close enough to track them in real time.
Claire told the doorman to send Kelly up.
When the elevator opened, Kelly stepped out without sunglasses, makeup, or confidence.
She carried a small white envelope.
"I know you hate me."
Claire's expression did not move.
"You're overestimating your importance."
Kelly swallowed.
"Then hate what's in this instead."
She placed the envelope on the table.
May you like
Inside was a keycard to the Miami condominium.
And underneath it was a photograph of Daniel standing beside another woman Claire had never seen before.
