Chapter 14 - Fifty-One Percent
The board vote was not unanimous.
That made it stronger.
Two directors initially argued that Daniel should remain temporarily to protect market confidence.
Evelyn insisted that confidence built on concealed misconduct was not confidence at all.
Claire did not threaten anyone.
She did not invoke her controlling stake to force the outcome.
She simply asked that every director read the evidence before voting.
They did.
Daniel was removed as chief executive pending completion of the investigation.
His company access was terminated immediately.
His authority over corporate cards, contracts, travel, and personnel ended before he left the room.
Daniel sat motionless as the resolution was read.
Then he looked at Claire.
"You think this makes you powerful?"
Claire folded her hands.
"No."
"It makes me responsible."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You never wanted responsibility."
The sentence hit an old wound.
For years, Claire had let him say that.
She had believed him sometimes.
Now she understood the manipulation hidden inside it.
Every time she stepped back, he called her weak.
Every time she stepped forward, he called her emotional.
There had never been a version of Claire that Daniel would consider qualified to disagree with him.
So she stopped trying to become one.
Maya escorted Daniel to a private conference room to review the terms of his suspension and evidence-preservation obligations.
Kelly remained in the boardroom.
"What happens to me?"
She asked.
Evelyn answered first.
"That depends on the investigation."
Kelly nodded.
She had approved improper expenses.
She had participated in deception.
Her cooperation would not erase that.
Claire appreciated the honesty of it.
"I am not asking anyone to protect you."
Claire said.
Kelly looked at her.
"I know."
"And I am not asking anyone to destroy you either."
Kelly's eyes filled.
"That's more than I deserve."
Claire looked away.
"This isn't about what you deserve."
"It's about what we can prove."
Later that afternoon, Leon decrypted part of Victor's drive.
The contents included forged approval templates, copied signatures, scanned passports, expense records, and private recordings.
One folder was labeled EXIT OPTIONS.
Inside were plans for Daniel to leave Mercer Atlantic after Blue Harbor closed.
He intended to sell a portion of the newly created voting entity to an outside investor, collect a massive payout, and relocate abroad.
Claire stared at the projections.
Daniel had not even planned to keep the company.
He had planned to strip it, monetize control, and leave everyone else fighting over the wreckage.
Then Leon opened a final audio file.
Daniel was speaking with Victor.
Claire recognized the date.
It was three days before the airport.
Daniel's voice was calm.
If Claire gets difficult, Kelly becomes the story.
If Kelly gets difficult, Sabrina becomes the story.
Victor asked, And if all three talk?
Daniel laughed.
They won't.
They hate each other too much.
The room went silent.
Claire looked at Kelly.
Kelly looked back.
Across an ocean, Sabrina was listening through the secure video link.
Daniel had built his plan on one assumption.
That the women he deceived would turn on one another before they ever compared notes.
Claire picked up her phone.
"Put Sabrina on the witness list."
Maya nodded.
Then Claire opened her calendar.
