Chapter 8 - Blue Harbor

The phrase Blue Harbor led them to a private banking firm registered in the Cayman Islands.

Its website said almost nothing.

Its clients were family offices, private investment partnerships, and international holding companies.

Maya contacted counsel there before dawn.

By breakfast, she had an answer.

A new trust structure had been scheduled for execution at Saint Aurelia.

The proposed settlor was Claire Mercer.

Claire stared at the email.

"I never created a new trust."

Maya's face was tight.

"Exactly."

The documents requested passport verification, a video identity check, and an electronic signature.

The structure would not directly transfer Claire's Mercer Atlantic shares.

It was subtler.

It would assign certain future distributions and voting proxies to a management entity controlled by Daniel.

If completed, Daniel could have claimed contractual authority over much of the economic benefit and influence attached to Claire's trust.

"Would it have worked?"

Claire asked.

Maya chose her words carefully.

"Not cleanly."

"We would have challenged it."

"But it could have created years of litigation and enough confusion for Daniel to seize practical control in the meantime."

Claire thought about the passport again.

The object suddenly felt heavier than paper.

Daniel had not simply carried it for convenience.

He had needed it close.

At Saint Aurelia, Daniel was learning that Blue Harbor had been frozen.

A representative called him in the hotel lobby.

"Mr. Mercer, we cannot proceed without direct confirmation from Ms. Mercer and her independent counsel."

Daniel gripped the phone.

"You were told her counsel would be present."

"The attorney named in the file has withdrawn."

Daniel stopped walking.

"Preston withdrew?"

"This morning."

Daniel ended the call and immediately dialed Preston Shaw.

The attorney answered after several rings.

"You promised this would be routine."

Daniel lowered his voice.

"It is routine."

"Your wife has independent counsel asking questions."

"The board is investigating."

"And I found a draft affidavit in the Blue Harbor file stating that I personally advised Claire."

Daniel said nothing.

Preston's voice hardened.

"I never met with her."

"I am not risking my license for you."

The call ended.

Daniel looked across the lobby.

Kelly was gone.

Her suitcase was gone too.

He ran to the front desk.

"The woman who checked in with me."

"Did she leave?"

The receptionist hesitated.

"She checked out about twenty minutes ago."

Daniel cursed under his breath.

His phone vibrated.

Kelly had sent one message.

You lied to both of us.

Then another notification appeared.

A news alert from an industry publication.

Mercer Atlantic Board Opens Internal Review of Executive Spending.

Daniel stared at the headline.

He had spent years building a reputation as the disciplined architect of Mercer Atlantic's growth.

One public investigation could crack that image.

He called Claire.

This time she answered.

"You are destroying the company."

Claire stood in her father's old office overlooking Manhattan.

"No."

"I'm checking whether you already did."

Daniel exhaled sharply.

"This is because of Kelly."

"You are embarrassed, and you are punishing everyone."

Claire looked at the Blue Harbor documents on her desk.

"Kelly is the least interesting thing you've done."

For the first time, Daniel had no immediate reply.

Claire continued.

"Come home."

"Bring the black encrypted drive."

Silence.

Then Daniel asked softly, "What drive?"

May you like

Claire smiled without warmth.

"Now I know it exists."
