Chapter 2 - The Message Behind the Glass

Claire did not go to the gate.

She entered an airline lounge on the opposite side of the terminal and chose a seat behind a frosted glass partition.

From there, Daniel could not easily see her, but she could still watch the gate through a narrow opening.

Maya stayed on the phone.

"Tell me exactly what you saw."

Claire forwarded the photographs and screenshots.

Maya was silent for nearly a minute.

"The affair matters personally."

"The shares matter legally."

Claire pressed her fingertips against her forehead.

"What restructuring papers?"

"I don't know yet."

"But your father left you fifty-one percent of Mercer Atlantic through the family trust."

"Daniel manages operations, but he cannot transfer your voting interest without your consent."

Claire watched Daniel glance repeatedly toward the corridor.

Kelly stood beside him, scrolling through her own phone with irritating calm.

"Can he fake my consent?"

Maya's answer came too quickly.

"He can try."

That was enough.

Claire opened the banking application linked to the family trust.

She saw three recent authorization requests she had never approved.

Each had been labeled executive liquidity adjustment.

The amounts totaled just over four million dollars.

Her stomach tightened.

"Maya, there are pending transfers."

"Do not touch them yet."

"Screenshot everything."

Claire did.

Then another anonymous message arrived.

Check the reservation name at Saint Aurelia.

Claire opened the resort confirmation Daniel had sent her.

The presidential villa was reserved under Mercer Atlantic Hospitality Holdings, a subsidiary controlled by the trust.

Daniel had not paid for the trip.

The company had.

The same was true for the private airport transfer, the boat charter, and the premium dining package.

Claire's anger became strangely quiet.

Daniel had not merely invited his mistress on their anniversary trip.

He had apparently used Claire's family company to finance it.

Maya asked for the confirmation number.

Claire sent it.

"I can instruct the trust administrator to suspend discretionary hospitality spending pending review."

"Would that cancel the booking?"

"It may."

"Do it."

Maya hesitated.

"You understand Daniel will know something is wrong."

Claire looked through the glass.

Daniel was speaking sharply to a gate agent.

Kelly had finally stopped smiling.

"Good."

A boarding alert flashed across Claire's screen.

Final call.

She made no move.

Daniel called her.

She let it ring twice before answering.

"Where are you?"

His voice was controlled, but she heard the irritation underneath.

"Restroom."

"Boarding is closing."

"Then board."

A short silence followed.

"Claire, don't be dramatic."

The old Claire might have defended herself.

The old Claire might have apologized for causing inconvenience.

This Claire stared at the photograph of him with Kelly.

"I'm not being dramatic."

"I'm nauseous."

Daniel lowered his voice.

"We have documents to review when we arrive."

There it was.

Not dinner reservations.

Not vows on the beach.

Documents.

Claire asked lightly, "What documents?"

"Just routine restructuring."

"Nothing complicated."

Her pulse slowed.

"Then you can explain them when we get there."

"Exactly."

"So get to the gate."

Claire watched him lift one hand in frustration.

Kelly stepped closer to him.

Too close.

"I need another minute."

Claire ended the call.

She immediately called Maya again.

"Find out who prepared those restructuring papers."

"Already working on it."

Claire's phone vibrated with a third anonymous message.

This one contained only five words.

He thinks you will sign.

Claire looked down at her passport.

Then she looked at the aircraft door closing in the distance.

Daniel and Kelly disappeared down the jet bridge without her.

May you like

Claire smiled for the first time that day.

She had no intention of following them.
