Chapter 4 - Declined

Saint Aurelia looked like a postcard designed to make people forget consequences.
The ocean beyond the resort lobby was impossibly blue.
Warm sunlight spilled across pale stone floors.
A wall of open windows carried in the scent of salt and hibiscus.
Daniel should have felt victorious.
Instead, he was sweating beneath his dark blue suit.
Kelly stood beside him in her short white dress, her sunglasses back on, one hand resting on the handle of her suitcase.
The receptionist typed Daniel's name into the system.
Her polite smile slowly faded.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Mercer."
"The presidential villa reservation was canceled this morning."
Daniel stared at her.
"Canceled by whom?"
"The corporate account holder."
Kelly turned her head.
"Claire?"
Daniel ignored her.
"Reinstate it."
The receptionist remained calm.
"We can create a new reservation if you provide another payment method."
Daniel pulled out a black corporate card.
The receptionist processed it.
The terminal beeped.
She tried again.
Another beep.
She handed the card back.
Daniel looked at the small display on the desk.
His face changed.
"Declined?"
Kelly lowered her sunglasses.
For the first time since arriving at the airport that morning, she looked genuinely alarmed.
Daniel reached for a second card.
That one failed too.
Then a third.
The receptionist's embarrassment was now greater than his.
"Sir, perhaps you should contact your bank."
Daniel stepped away from the desk and called his chief financial officer.
No answer.
He called the controller.
No answer.
He called his assistant director.
Straight to voicemail.
Kelly folded her arms.
"What did she do?"
Daniel turned on her.
"Nothing she can keep doing."
"The company is mine to run."
Kelly stared at him.
"You told me the company was yours."
Daniel's expression flickered.
"It is."
"Operationally."
Kelly repeated the word.
"Operationally?"
Daniel looked toward the receptionist, who was pretending not to listen.
"Not here."
Kelly stepped closer.
"You said you controlled everything."
"I control management."
"Claire owns the trust shares."
Kelly's face went still.
"Fifty-one percent?"
Daniel did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Kelly removed her sunglasses entirely.
"Then what exactly was she signing tomorrow?"
Daniel grabbed the handle of his suitcase.
"A restructuring that would have solved that."
Kelly stared at him.
"Would have?"
Daniel's phone began ringing.
It was Evelyn Price.
He answered with forced confidence.
"Evelyn."
"Daniel, the board is convening an emergency meeting tomorrow morning."
His face drained.
"On whose authority?"
"Mine, with the support of three independent directors and the controlling shareholder."
Daniel's eyes moved toward the ocean.
"Claire is overreacting to a marital issue."
Evelyn's voice turned hard.
"This is not a marital issue."
"This concerns corporate funds, unauthorized commitments, and possible self-dealing."
Daniel looked at Kelly.
She took one slow step away from him.
"You will preserve all company devices and records."
Evelyn continued.
"Do not delete anything."
The call ended.
Daniel stood motionless.
Kelly's phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen and quickly turned it face down.
Daniel noticed.
"Who is that?"
"Nobody."
"Show me."
Kelly laughed once, without humor.
"You don't get to order me around right now."
The receptionist cleared her throat.
"Mr. Mercer, we do have one standard garden room available."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Fine."
"The nightly rate is twelve hundred dollars plus tax."
Daniel handed over his personal card.
The receptionist processed it.
This time the payment went through.
Kelly watched him carefully.
"So at least that still works."
Daniel said nothing.
His phone vibrated again.
A bank alert appeared.
Joint credit access temporarily restricted pending account-holder verification.
He looked up slowly.
Kelly's smugness vanished.
"Daniel."
"What did you promise her?"
May you like
He stared toward the elevators.
"More than she was ever supposed to find out."
