Chapter 12 - The Scapegoat
Sabrina sent the file through Maya's encrypted portal.
It was a draft internal investigation memo prepared weeks before the Saint Aurelia trip.
The memo accused Kelly Vaughn of unauthorized expense approvals, falsified reimbursements, and improper access to executive credentials.
It recommended immediate termination and referral to law enforcement.
The date on the draft was two days after Claire was supposed to sign the Blue Harbor documents.
Claire stared at it in disbelief.
"He wrote her ending before the trip started."
Maya nodded.
"If the restructuring succeeded, he no longer needed Kelly."
"And blaming her for the expenses would make him look deceived instead of involved."
Kelly arrived at the office thirty minutes later.
Claire placed the memo in front of her.
Kelly read the first page.
Her face lost all color.
"Where did you get this?"
"Sabrina."
Kelly looked up sharply.
"She spoke to you?"
"She told me you contacted her three weeks ago."
Kelly's eyes closed.
Claire waited.
Finally, Kelly whispered, "I was going to blackmail him."
Maya said nothing.
Claire's expression remained flat.
Kelly continued.
"I found Sabrina's messages."
"I realized Daniel had lied about the shares."
"I thought if I had enough evidence, I could force him to give me money and leave you."
Claire felt anger rise again.
"So you were not saving me."
"No."
Kelly swallowed.
"Not then."
"What changed?"
Kelly tapped the memo.
"I found part of this on his laptop the night before the airport."
"I saw my name, the expense allegations, and a note about criminal referral."
"I understood I was next."
Claire stared at her.
"Then why walk up to us smiling?"
Kelly looked ashamed.
"Because I wanted him to think I still trusted him."
"And I wanted you suspicious enough to check your phone."
"Sabrina had already agreed to message you."
The airport scene replayed in Claire's mind.
Kelly's casual smile.
Daniel's confidence.
The deliberate closeness.
It had been provocation.
Not kindness.
But not entirely cruelty either.
Maya asked Kelly for every password, device, and record she still possessed.
Kelly agreed.
Then Claire's phone rang.
Daniel.
She answered on speaker.
"The board meeting is in an hour."
His voice was calm again.
Too calm.
"I suggest we settle this privately before then."
Claire looked at Kelly.
"What are you offering?"
"You keep your trust shares."
"I resign as CEO after a transition period."
"We announce an amicable separation."
"And Kelly takes responsibility for the unauthorized expenses."
Kelly's face twisted.
Daniel did not know she was in the room.
Claire asked, "Why would Kelly agree to that?"
Daniel's answer was chilling.
"Because she does not have a better option."
Kelly covered her mouth.
Claire's anger became ice.
"Send the proposal in writing."
Daniel laughed softly.
"You finally learned something from me."
Claire looked at the memo in front of Kelly.
"More than you realize."
After the call, Maya received an alert from the company's cybersecurity team.
Someone had just attempted to access the executive archive using Claire's credentials.
The login came from inside Mercer Atlantic headquarters.
Daniel was not there yet.
