Chapter 7 - The Missing Folder

The board suspended Daniel from all financial authority before noon.

They did not remove him as chief executive.

Not yet.

Evelyn wanted proof strong enough to survive both litigation and public scrutiny.

Claire agreed.

She no longer wanted a dramatic victory.

She wanted one that could not be reversed.

The warning about Kelly stayed in her mind.

Leon examined the laptop and found something strange.

The folder marked S.A. PERSONAL had been copied from another device only forty minutes before the laptop was delivered.

Someone had curated the evidence.

Someone had chosen what Claire was meant to see.

"Could Kelly have done it?"

Claire asked.

Leon nodded.

"Easily."

"Could Daniel?"

"Also easily."

Maya frowned.

"Then assume every piece of evidence is both useful and potentially staged."

That afternoon, Kelly finally called Claire.

Claire put the call on speaker with Maya present.

"Where are you?"

Kelly's voice was quiet.

"Not with Daniel."

"That is not an answer."

"I'm at the airport."

Claire looked at Maya.

"Why did you send your laptop?"

Kelly hesitated.

"Because he asked me to destroy it."

"Did you?"

"No."

"Did you send the anonymous messages?"

Another pause.

"No."

Claire believed the pause more than the answer.

"You helped prepare the restructuring."

Kelly inhaled.

"I scheduled meetings."

"You approved expenses."

"Because he told me to."

"You slept with my husband."

Kelly said nothing.

Claire continued.

"And you expected ten percent of my company."

Kelly's voice cracked for the first time.

"He told me it would come from his shares."

"He does not have enough shares."

"I know that now."

Claire closed her eyes.

"So why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't."

The answer surprised her.

Kelly continued.

"But you should know he has another folder."

Maya leaned closer to the phone.

"What folder?"

"He called it Blue Harbor."

"I never had access."

"He kept it on a private cloud account and sometimes downloaded papers to a black encrypted drive."

Claire remembered Daniel packing a slim black case into his carry-on at the airport.

She had assumed it held headphones.

"What is Blue Harbor?"

"I don't know."

Kelly's voice lowered.

"But every time he talked about Claire losing control, he mentioned it."

The call ended when boarding began at Kelly's gate.

Maya immediately filed a request for emergency preservation of Daniel's corporate and personal business records.

Leon traced references to Blue Harbor across company servers.

Most were deleted.

One survived in an archived calendar attachment.

Blue Harbor closing package.

Required item: Original passport verification for C. Mercer.

Claire felt a chill.

"Why would they need my passport?"

Maya stared at the line.

"Identity verification."

"Possibly for an offshore transaction."

Claire's mind flashed back to the airport.

Daniel holding her passport.

Daniel telling her to sit down.

Daniel insisting they had to board.

Her phone buzzed again.

Anonymous sender.
