Chapter 13 - The Man in the Hallway

Security locked down the executive floor within minutes.
No one was allowed to leave without being logged.
The unauthorized login had come from a conference room two doors away from the boardroom.
When security opened it, the room was empty.
A laptop remained on the table.
The user profile belonged to Victor Hale.
Daniel's security consultant had arrived in New York that morning.
Claire felt the final piece slide into place.
Victor had taken the tablet from Miami.
Victor had access to buildings, devices, travel schedules, and private files.
He was the invisible hand that made Daniel's schemes possible.
But Victor was not in the conference room.
A security camera showed him leaving the floor three minutes before lockdown.
He carried a slim black case.
"The drive."
Claire said.
Leon nodded.
"Likely."
Maya contacted building security and law enforcement counsel.
No one made dramatic accusations.
No one chased Victor through the lobby.
They preserved footage, access logs, and the abandoned laptop.
Claire had learned enough to know that evidence mattered more than spectacle.
Then Evelyn entered with urgent news.
Daniel was downstairs.
"He wants to attend in person."
Claire looked at Kelly.
"Does he know you're here?"
Kelly shook her head.
"Not unless Victor told him."
Claire made a decision.
"Let him in."
Daniel entered the boardroom ten minutes later.
He wore the same dark blue suit from the airport, though it was now wrinkled from travel.
His eyes found Claire first.
Then Kelly.
He stopped.
"You."
Kelly held his gaze.
"Me."
Daniel looked around the table.
"This is absurd."
"My wife catches me in an affair, and suddenly every business decision becomes a conspiracy."
Evelyn slid the Blue Harbor draft toward him.
"Explain this."
Daniel did not touch it.
"Estate planning."
Maya played Preston's voicemail.
Daniel's expression barely changed.
Then she displayed the draft memo blaming Kelly.
For the first time, he looked at Kelly with real alarm.
"Where did you get that?"
Kelly's voice trembled, but she did not look away.
"From the woman you tried this on before me."
Daniel's face went blank.
"Sabrina is lying."
Claire watched him carefully.
"You knew immediately who she meant."
Daniel turned toward her.
"Claire, listen to me."
"No."
"You listen."
The boardroom fell silent.
Claire placed her passport on the table.
"You held this at the airport because Blue Harbor needed identity verification."
Daniel shook his head.
"That's ridiculous."
"You needed me on the island because Preston had arranged a notary and remote banking session."
"You expected me to sign documents you described as tax cleanup."
"Then you planned to shift control, blame Kelly for the expenses, and tell the board I was unstable if I resisted."
Daniel looked toward Evelyn.
"She is emotional."
It was the worst sentence he could have chosen.
Evelyn leaned back slowly.
"I have known Claire since she was sixteen."
"The only person losing control in this room is you."
Daniel stood.
"This meeting is over."
Evelyn's voice remained calm.
"Sit down."
Daniel stared at her.
"The board is voting on your removal."
Before the vote began, Leon received a message from security.
Victor had been stopped at the building exit after returning unexpectedly.
The black case was with him.
Inside was the encrypted drive.

Daniel sat down.
For the first time since the airport, he had nowhere left to go.
